About

I am Alex Gab. I paint whatever runs through me, without any preset plan. I always start with the eyes. The rest — the face, the body, the background — comes afterwards, almost as a response.

What I do sits between abstraction and figuration. The backgrounds are often free: flat areas, textures, accidents. Then a figure appears, almost always alone, almost always a face. I love large formats — that is where I breathe best; I also work on smaller pieces.

Acrylic, oil, oil pastel, oil stick, gold leaf, sometimes collage. I take whatever I need in the moment.

What interests me is what painting shares with music: creating emotion through the senses. Colours and shapes can move us without our understanding why. I am a viewer of painting before being a painter — Basquiat, Twombly, Still, Klimt, Kupka. Standing in front of their canvases, something happens. That something is what I am looking for in the studio.
